How to Season & Burn-In Your Grill
One-time initial firing process
Before cooking the first batch of food in your new Traeger, you will need to season your grill. This simple, one-time initial firing process will burn off any residual, non-toxic oils from the manufacturing process and help create non-stick surfaces so that you get the most out of your Traeger Wood Pellet Grill.

A WiFIRE grill will take about one and a half hours, while a non-connected grill will take roughly an hour.

Steps for Seasoning Your WiFIRE Grill
- Step 1: Prime your auger tube with pellets
- Step 2: Plug in grill to an electrical outlet and turn on
- Step 3: Add hardwood pellets to hopper
- Step 4: Turn the main power switch on
- Step 5: Turn dial to “Select Auger” then choose “Prime Auger”
- Step 6: Once pellets begin to fall into firepot, select “Done” to turn off auger
- Step 7: Turn selection dial clockwise to 350°F (177°C) and press the dial
- Step 8: Press ignite, close the lid, and when the temperature reaches 350°F, run for 20 minutes
- Step 9:* Adjust temperature to 450°F (232°C)
- Step 10:* When the temperature reaches 450°F, run for an additional 30 minutes
- Step 11:* Shut down grill by pressing the Selection dial for three seconds on a Pro Series Grill. For an Ironwood or Timberline, press the Standby button for three seconds to initiate the shutdown cycle.
- Step 12: Once the shutdown cycle finishes, seasoning of your grill is complete

Steps for Seasoning Your Non-Connected Grill
- Step 1: Make sure all internal components are inside the grill. This includes the heat baffle, drip tray, and grill grates.
- Step 2: Plug in the grill to an electrical outlet. Turn it on using the switch on the front of the controller.
- Step 3: Add hardwood pellets to the hopper.
- Step 4: Prime the auger with pellets.
- Open the lid and remove all internal components, like the grill grate, drip tray, and heat baffle.
- On the grill controller, set the grill to High (or highest temp possible) until you see pellets fall into the firepot, about 2 to 5 minutes.
- Step 5: Turn off the grill using the power switch on the front of the controller.
- Step 6: Return all internal components to their correct places inside the grill (heat baffle, drip tray, and grill grates).
- Step 7: Turn the grill back on, close the lid, and set the controller to Smoke.
- Step 8: Wait approximately 15 minutes for the fire to establish in the grill. Once the fire is established, the smoke should be thin and light blue in color, not thick and white.
- Step 9: Using the grill controller, turn the grill to High (or highest temp possible).
- Step 10: Run the grill on High for 30 minutes.
- Step 11: After 30 minutes, you are good either to start cooking or to continue to Step 12 to shut down the grill.
- Step 12: Set the grill to Shutdown Cycle. The shutdown cycle will run approximately 25 minutes.
- Step 12: Once the shut down cycle is complete, turn off the grill using the power switch.
Your grill seasoning is now complete and you are ready to start grilling.
